My most recent memory of the tree is one I cherish. I was able to watch it being cut down. There was something cathartic about watching the process (and even helping with my headlights!) I think it would have been much harder to come to school today and see the blank space without the chance I had to say good bye. Thanks, Kathy, for giving me that opportunity.

I have a very vivid memory of our beloved pine tree. The summer before last, on the first day of our program for incoming freshmen, the group I was leading chose to go outside, under that gorgeous tree, to meet and greet each other. I suppose some of the kids were nervous or anxious. It was their first day at Ithaca High School. They had never met most of the other people there, including me. We introduced ourselves and shared something to help the group get to know us. There was a lot of laughter as the kids began to relax with each other. The day was sunny and beautiful. It was a wonderful place to begin our friendships, which in many cases, have continued to this day. When I see those kids in the hall, I am taken back to that first day, standing under that majestic tree. It seems fitting that we also ended our week together under the trees…at the Cayuga Nature Center, challenging ourselves on the high ropes course.

The Tree.
First of all, we have all thought about it, cutting down as a prank. But, as a class of 1995 member I will always remember the cool shade it gave me while I gawked at hot girls in the quad, or the subtle whisps it offered over a hackysack game.
I will miss the tree…..forever.

A 1971 IHS graduate, I remember sitting on the benches that encircled the tree – -between classes, hanging out after lunch, or just waiting to meet friends at the end of the day. The tree was a lovely focal point for the courtyard, and provided welcome shade in the summer. For it to have met such an untimly end because someone decided to ‘damage something’ is sad, indeed. I hope they catch whoever did this, and sentence that individual to a year of planting trees at Cayuga Nature Center! I also hope another tree is planted in its place.

I can’t say I never thought about cutting down the tree, but I found much more clever and less (if only slightly) destructive pranks to pull.
Where will all the tree people congregate now?
Where will we hide from Boon when he has all entrances to the quad covered?
I hope they plant another tree.
It won’t be the same, but it will be something.
